Trump Is Terrified for the Real Victims of #MeToo: Men

By Wednesday afternoon, according to The Washington Post, the White House’s confidence in Brett Kavanaugh had begun to waver, with Donald Trump reportedly crafting a plan to blame Senate Republican leadership, should his nomination fail. However, as Trump knows, admitting uncertainty in the face of a grueling Supreme Court nomination process is not the way to drum up the necessary support ahead of midterm elections. And so, aware that he needed to counter any lurking suspicions that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford may have exposed herself to the anguish of publicly reliving her assault because she is telling the truth, Trump tried a different tack, warning Americans—and American men in particular—of the true danger of the #MeToo movement. Over the course of an expansive, 81-minute-long press conference in New York, the president was asked by CBS’s Steven Portnoy whether he, as a president and a father, had a message for the young men of America. Trump certainly did. Explaining that he, Kavanaugh, and a number of his friends who have been accused of sexual misconduct are the victims of a “big, fat con job,” he warned any keenly listening young men that they, too, could run afoul of the insatiable #MeToo movement, which is “being perpetrated by some very evil people, some of whom are Democrats, I must say.”

Holding up Portnoy as an example, he said, pointing, “I could have you chosen for a position. And somebody could say things. And it’s happened to me, many times, where false statements are made, and, honestly, nobody knows who to believe.” Lamenting the real danger that some men might not even want to be nominated for the Supreme Court after witnessing the trauma the “wonderful” Kavanaugh suffered, the president explained that his argument was much bigger than one isolated case. “This is everything to do with our…
